O greatly fortunate farmers, if only they knew
How lucky they are! Far from the battlefield,
Earth brings forth from herself in ample justice
The simple means of life, simply enjoyed.
What if there's no great mansion from whose proud
High doors at dawn the crowd of those who came
Doors as those doors, adorned with tortoiseshell,
Or draperies tricked out with gold, or bronzes
Brought from Ephyraeus; what if no dye
Imported from Assyria has ever
Stained his pure white woolen cloth;
What if the clear plain daily olive oil he uses
Has never been sophisticated by
The mingling in of oil of cassia bark?
His sleep at night is easy, his life knows nothing
About deceit or trickery, and his life
Is rich in many things: tranquillity
Of the broad fields, of grottoes, and of lakes,
Of cattle lowing while in the shade of a tree
A youth accustomed to simplicity
And disciplined by work, respect for the elders,
And for the gods. When Justice left the earth,
She left her footprint here, among such people.
